What's a clinical trial? A vital step toward what's possible.

What is a Clinical Trial

Clinical trials offer promising opportunities for the development of innovative therapies aimed at addressing human diseases and health conditions.

Engaging volunteers is crucial for assessing the effectiveness and safety of new therapies through clinical trials. These research studies are typically organized by the study’s sponsor or a contract research organization (CRO) that the sponsor hires to manage the trial. The journey begins when a pharmaceutical or biotechnology company develops a new therapeutic device or compound.

Following this, an extensive testing phase unfolds, lasting several years, during which new therapies undergo rigorous laboratory evaluations to confirm their safety. Only a small fraction of these potential therapies successfully navigates this initial testing phase, and those that do advance to the pre-clinical stage, where they are tested on animals.

After successfully completing animal trials, the candidate must receive approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to enter a multi-phase process of human testing. Throughout these three phases, the drug candidate is introduced to progressively larger groups of patients at clinical investigation sites across the United States and globally. Sponsors choose specific clinical research sites or networks to initiate the trials, which then recruit volunteers who meet the necessary criteria.

The investigator sites administer the treatment on behalf of the sponsor and gather extensive data, including information on efficacy, safety, stability, and potential interactions, among other metrics. Once safety and effectiveness are established, the FDA grants approval for the therapy, allowing the sponsor to bring it to market.
